Windmills….

The Windmills of Zaanse Scans, Holland

The above photograph was shot in 1990 while I was visiting Holland as a tourist. Whenever I look at this photo the following lines of the song “The Windmills of your mind” start playing in my mind….

Round, Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
As the images unwind
Like the circle that you find
In the windmills of your mind……………..

Like a tunnel that you follow
To a tunnel of it’s own
Down a hollow to a cavern
Where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving
In a half forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble
Someone tosses in a stream……………..

Like the circle that you find
In the windmills of your mind……………..

(From the song “The Windmills of your mind” written by Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman for the movie “The Thomas Crown Affair”.)

Just like these windmills in the picture above, the ever spinning windmills of the human mind have kept generating huge amount of energy for ages in the form of human dreams, desires, ideas and creativity . That same energy, which has propelled the cave dwelling human being from its near animalistic existence millions of years ago to its current form of existence, keeps pushing us through our individual lives.

That spinning of windmills keeps us restless all through our lives. It creates the desires and also gives the energy to achieve them. It also creates an illusion that the peace will be ours once we achieve that one desire. Then, after every achievement there comes a moment of peace giving the glimpse of what the human life is really striving for – the peace of mind. But before we realize, the windmill spins again and raises another dream, another desire and we start running once again after that mirage called achievement mistaking it for that ever elusive peace of mind.

What propels the windmills of our mind? How can their spinning be put to rest?

Can someone please tell?
